Uhuru and Ruto to be vetted by EACC

The Ethics and Anti -Corruption Commission (EACC) will have to vet Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto before they contest in the next General Election.

This is according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman, Mr Issack Hassan, who said the two will only be blocked if they will not have been cleared by the ethics commission.

The IEBC chairman said this will be one of the duties handed to the EACC once the Leadership and Integrity Bill becomes law.

“The integrity Bill will give the ethics commission the powers to clear candidates and this is one of the documents that we will require candidates to present once they come to seek nomination from us,” Hassan said.

He further added that Kenyans should wait for the outcome of a case that seeks to have the court rule on whether Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto can run for elections while facing trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) relating to the 2007 election violence.

Hassan was speaking at a Nairobi hotel on Thursday, after Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Eugene Wamalwa launched the commission’s new brand identity.
